The difference between floor lamps and torchieres is that a torchieres feature light which shines upward while floor lamps have heads which shine downwards or can be adjusted to shine in a desired location.
Floor lamps and torchieres are perfect for adding ambient (general) light to a dark corner or as task lighting for things such as reading or writing if placed near a chair of desk.
Different floor lamps and torchieres can be used with incandescent, halogen, fluorescent and LED bulbs. Determine how much wattage will be required to light the area you are putting the lamp and double check the product specifications to see if the lamp can withstand the wattage. Each light bulb type has its advantages, such as the energy-saving characteristics of LED and fluorescent bulbs. The key is to choose which light bulb your eyes are used to for the task you will use the light for in your home. For example, some people prefer the light of an LED for reading while other lean towards a traditional incandescent.
If you are using a floor lamp for general lighting find one tall enough that the bottom of the shade is just above eye level. For torchieres used for general lighting the top of the uplight ’s edge should be above eye level. For reading, the floor lamp should shine downwards at lower than eye level, since reading is usually a task done sitting.
It is important to take note of where the power switch is located on the lamp such as near the bulb, on the cord or remote control. If you will be putting your lamp in an area hard to reach it might be a good idea to get a remote control light.
Also, there are features such as armed floor lamps which feature adjustable arms, floor lamps with tables and arc shape floor lamps.
Also, aesthetic features such as style (contemporary, transitional, etc.) and finishes (bronze, nickel, etc.) are features to notice so that you find the perfect lamp or torchiere to fit the style of your home.
