A Security Light, or Flood Light, is a high intensity light fixture that is able to illuminate large areas evenly. Home intruders often look for an easy target. If there is any kind of security visible, they will generally move on to the next potential target. Also, in general, would-be intruders tend to break into homes that are shrouded in darkness, so just by simply lighting your perimeter with floodlights you will greatly increase the security of your home or business. Strategically placed in trees or on a wall, floodlights can illuminate areas such as driveways, walkways, parking areas, backyards, lawns, porches, alleys, and any other areas that would normally be hidden by darkness.
Floodlights also help light your path and provide piece of mind when you are returning home after dark, or need to venture out into the perimeter of your home to investigate something. They also shine so brightly that you can investigate from within your home looking outward.
When choosing a place to install a security light, be sure to position the lights at least nine feet from the ground to make them difficult to reach or disable, and choose a location that provides maximum light and illuminates high-traffic areas.
It is important to pay attention to where a spot light may be mounted. For example, the light should never shine into neighboring homes or onto neighboring property, as this may be perceived as breaching their privacy. Also, a flood light should always be pointing downwards with an ideal angle of 22 degrees. In this position, it illuminates walls without blinding an observer who may not be able to witness the intrusion otherwise.
Common places to install a flood light and/or security light:
There are numerous ways to automate a security floodlight. Dusk to dawn floodlights operate only during dark hours. Motion sensors are ideal because they activate floodlights only when motion is detected. This provides a stronger deterrent to would-be thieves because it gives a sudden blast of light at just the right time, creating the impression that they’ve been spotted. Strategically placed motion sensing floodlights will pinpoint suspicious movement for you as they come on.
The advantage of the stand alone Infrared Motion Sensor is that it can be mounted away from the light fitting to trigger as soon as a person enters the driveway rather than when the person is directly in front of the wall light. Also, the stand alone sensor can be used to trigger a number of lights to come on at the same time. These sensors are available with various adjustments such as the length of time the light remains on, and the level of light that you want the sensor to start operating at.
A photocell works with the light levels. It has a tiny sensor built in that will turn the lights automatically on at dusk, and off again at dawn, which takes the hassle out of remembering to switch the lights on at night if used for security.
Wall lights are available in a wide range of finishes to suit everybody. There is the standard black, white, and green colors which are typically lacquer over a solid aluminum base. Another option is stainless steel, which requires mild maintenance to keep it in good condition (a light rub over with cooking oil ensures this).Copper is a classic exterior wall light finish which over time will age to give a fantastic rustic look.
Security lighting can also help deter small feral animals from hanging around your yard. Small animals can destroy bushes and tear up trash, creating a smelly mess. Bright lights that trigger when they detect the animal can scare them away, saving you money and protecting your gardens and outdoor spaces.
If you're lighting your landscape, you'll need to decide whether to use low-voltage, wireless solar, or direct-wire lights before you begin. Low-voltage systems require a transformer while solar lights will need to be placed in areas where they'll receive plenty of sun. Also, look for a manual override facility. This allows you to switch on the light if required, useful for providing a constant light source.
Security lighting is a simple and easy way to deter criminals and alert you to approaching visitors. Outdoor lighting is not only a security method, but it’s also a way to light pathways when traveling from your car to the front door of your home. Utilizing proper lighting at night is a great way to secure your home and can be the first step to ensure petty criminals will avoid your home for robbery that can also harm your family. Make an investment in your family's security by adding security lights to your home and install a little peace of mind.
