Security and Flood Lights FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions: Security and Flood Lights RAB Lighting 2 Light Bell Style Flood Kit Mounting Plate Security Light

Should I use a motion-activated security light?

Security lights, or flood lights, attached to motion sensors have their advantages and disadvantages. When properly placed, they will alert you to someone on your property. They go on and off whether you are home or not and cut down on electricity costs because they are not consistently on. Motion sensor security lights do need to be placed properly so small animals and people walking by on the sidewalk do not set off your security lights every time they come anywhere near your property.

What is a “dusk-till-dawn” light?

Dusk-till-dawn security lights sense the amount of available light. These security lights will automatically turn on when it begins to get dark and will turn off when the sun rises in the morning. They provide consistent illumination when needed, but lack the shock that motion activated security lights may give a burglar.

Where is the best place to install outdoor security lighting?

Security lights should be placed at all points of entry to your home and should be elevated from the ground so they are out of reach of vandals and potential burglars. They should be installed so all sides of your home are well lit when the lights are turned on.

What is “range of detection” and what range should I use?

“Range of detection” is typically an angle measurement that tells you how much space the motion detector covers. This will help you determine how many lights you need to surround your home.

Can I install a security light myself or do I need to hire an electrician?

Security lights are pretty basic to install if you have an existing exterior light. You’ll just need a couple of basic tools for the install. Make sure you turn off the electricity before you install any lighting.

If you are not comfortable installing a light or do not have an existing exterior light, you probably want to hire a professional to help.
