Transformers FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions: Transformers

Where would I use a transformer?

Transformers are required if you are installing low voltage indoor or outdoor lighting. In the United States, the standard electrical output is 120 volts, so if your lights are a lower voltage, you will need a transformer.

Outdoor lighting, track lighting and under cabinet lights are commonly low voltage. Read the product description to see how many volts your light runs on. If this number is less than 120 volts, you will need a transformer. Some low voltage lights, especially pendant lights, come with a transformer, so make double check to see if your light comes with a transformer.

What factors affect voltage drop?

Voltage drop is affected by the number of watts, the length of the wiring, the voltage at the transformer and the size of the wire. If you are experiencing voltage drop, try changing one or more of these factors.

How is a low voltage transformer wired into the lighting circuit?

First, turn off the power. Then make sure that the input wires of the transformer are connected to the power line using the terminal screws and that the output wires are connected to the low voltage lights. Use terminal blocks to make sure the connection is secure. Some transformers can be wired to the lights and will just be plugged in to a standard grounded outlet.
