You can mount it all the way flush to the ceiling or a bit lower - there is some flexibility there. It's a great looking, simple, elegant light. The oil-rubbed bronze section was pretty beat up (looked like someone put it through a garbage disposal) but you can't tell once it's up on the ceiling.
