Napoleon was on campaign in Egypt in 1799 when his wife Josephine bought the chateau of Malmaison near Paris. She hired architects Percier and Fontaine to decorate in a style that would later become known as French Empire. The styles simple, strong lines recall motifs of the Roman Empire and has been appreciated for over two centuries at Malmaison.
