10 Tips for Hosting the Perfect Shower

So, you have a shower to throw and of course you want it to be none other than brilliant and joyous. Fair warning: It’s easier said than done. As a host, there’s pressure to please the expecting mother, bride- or couple-to-be, but also to entertain and provide food and a cozy environment to their family and friends. Sure, hosting always comes with challenges, but when it comes to a shower due diligence is ever so essential. Wedding and baby showers tend to get a bad rap because they include a lot of work – more than most might suspect, in fact. There are usually a diverse group of guests that differ in age and levels of acquaintance that can add up to an entanglement of awkward conversations, and that’s not to mention painstaking participation in endless corny games and the lengthy pageantry of monotonous gift-opening. This provoked us to rattle up a few precautions to consider so your foresight is 20/20 and your hindsight is nothing but fond memories. Tip #1: Make sure there are enough chairs and space to accommodate the entire guest list. Call friends, ask neighbors and get creative! Arrange a comfy room and plenty of seating or else sulking is sure to ensue. Tip #2: Go over all of your ideas with the guest of honor prior to planning so complaints don’t arise after your efforts are exhausted in preparation and execution. Tip #3: Confirm the honoree is straight on the date, location, time and guest list to save you both from unnecessary emails and phone calls. Communicate well so that word spreads with minimal confusion. Tip #4: A simple icebreaker game to start off is a swell way to encourage introductions and interaction. Tip #5: Avoid any activities that may take too long and rule out games that are complicated and/or messy. Tip #6: Skip the superfluous party favors. It’s a time-consuming drain of unnecessariness. When did party favors branch out beyond kids’ birthday parties? Tip #7: Solicit a competent helper so you have time to mingle and see to it that everyone is integrated into the conversations and all is well. Tip #8: You’ll be a hero if you can speed the gift-opening along! Enlist an organizer to record the bounty, a cleanup crew to bag the wrappings and a photographer to capture the moment. Tip #9: Also, the gifts don’t have to be revealed in a ceremonious fashion, as it’s one of the biggest complaints among shower-goers. One suggestion is to open gifts as they are given and designate an area where they can be conveniently displayed. Tip #10: Remember that what’s most important is to have fun and relax and your guests will be inclined to do the same!
