12 Essential Farmhouse Style Tips (Part I)

Sometimes achieving a particular look is like putting together a puzzle, and it’s no less true when it comes to bringing farmhouse style into your home.

What’s the difference between farmhouse style, rustic style and the log cabin look? The differences are subtle, and the styles tend to overlap, but these 12 ideas might help you home in on a more specific down-home feel. Let's take a look at the first six:

Exposed Beams

You might think this is an all-or-nothing décor attribute, because you either have 'em or you don’t, but that’s actually not the case – faux wood beams are absolutely a thing, and they’re not that difficult to install.

In fact, there are a few different ways you can achieve the look, depending on how much time, money and effort you want to invest.

Period Furniture

Ah, but what period, you might ask? Mission-style furniture is always a good route to go, as it trades Victorian frills for a durable yet stately look and captures the rugged beauty that defines farmhouse style.

Unfinished Wood

Unfinished furniture isn’t too hard to find; the real challenge with it is staying in the farmhouse mode without slipping into a more rustic look. And, rustic isn’t a bad thing, but it might be one step closer to a wagon-wheel coffee table than you might want to get.

Wrought-Iron Accents

From knobs to exposed nail heads, wrought iron can be a great way to put a finish on your farmhouse décor. But again, overdo it and things could start looking a little too rustic.

Earthy Tones

Blacks, beiges, browns, umbers, ambers – balance these colors against your clapboard whites both inside and out for a more natural, organic look.

Oil-Rubbed Bronze

Few finishes are more versatile than oil-rubbed bronze, but that’s not why it’s on the list. It earns its place by capturing the farmhouse feel with burnished tones and the deep, dark hue of something handmade – but for a price that’s usually quite reasonable.

Check back tomorrow for six more easy ways you can add a touch of farmhouse style to your home, even if you live right in the heart of the city.
