3 Questionable Color Combinations

Cookies and milk. Batman and Robin. Lindsay Lohan and baffling life choices. These combinations just make sense to us. You can call it cultural conditioning or cosmic coincidence, but either way we have grown to expect to see these things together. They have become symbols of a more familiar world. The same can be said of many color combinations. Nature, nurture and cable TV have brainwashed us into associating particular colors with particular things. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to these pairings when using color in your design plans. Below are three color combinations you may want to think twice about when decorating. (Note: Yes, we know black and white are shades and not colors. We’re counting them, anyway.)

1. Yellow and Black

Nature has conditioned us to think anxiously about bumble bees when we see these colors. Insects, sports cars and high school football teams are really the only things that exist that can make this combination work. If you do decide to go down this road make sure you try to soften the balance. Lighter shades of yellow and charcoal can start to look pretty amazing, but plain black and sun yellow can create a bad buzz. Santa, Christmas and candy canes kinda own this combo all year-round in many pro-holiday pockets around the country. Red and green can also suffer this fate, but it’s more easily made less noticeable. Again, red and white is not impossible, but it should be kept pretty light. A scarlet red rug and red accents in a white-on-white room is how they rock it in the North Pole. Try creams and other off-white colors in non-stripe patterns to make red work its magic. It’s often just too foreign for our brains to make any sense of it. Unless you’re Willy Wonka, you may want to go with another option. Of course, this combo can work wonders if executed carefully. Lavender and orange cream are a far cry from Barney holding a bagful of tangerines, and the broader themes in the room can often make a big difference.
