3 Tricks for Making Your Resolution Stick

Ah … the New Year’s resolution. It’s a tradition as time-honored as celebrating the new year itself, although scientific studies show that only 8% of Americans who make resolutions actually keep them. (Yes, unfortunately that statistic is real.) A lot of people have different ideas about how to make a New Year’s resolution stick, but the methods that really work have more to do with “tricking” your mind rather than making a conscious decision to change your habits, because that’s really hard to do. <ol style="list-style-type: none;"> <li><strong>1.       </strong><strong>The Exercise/Weight Loss Resolution  </strong></li> </ol> This is the giant of all resolutions – you’re going to start exercising (tomorrow!) and get healthy. But, tomorrow is supposed to be really cold, and you’re very busy, and the kids are sick, and the dryer’s on the fritz, and … you get the picture. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Trick</span>: Invest in <a href="http://www.atgstores.com/promotions/nyrezolutions.aspx" target="_blank">a healthy new hobby that you find enjoyable</a>. If you hate running, don’t force yourself to run. You’ll just quit. The same goes for the gym. If you can, find a partner you like who also wants to play. Hopefully, you’ll start looking forward to the activity and the exercise will just be a bonus. <ol style="list-style-type: none;"> <li><strong>2.      </strong><strong>The No-Smoking Resolution</strong></li> </ol> Overcoming an actual chemical addiction is pretty tough. Some people sneer at this weakness and can’t imagine how a person would want to smoke in the first place, often while taking long, deliciously hypocritical sips of coffee. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Trick</span>: Going “cold turkey” is an invitation to disappointment. Instead, try substituting your cigarette (or the break) with something else. Ideally, <a href="http://www.atgstores.com/sports-fitness_2347.html?linkloc=topnav" target="_blank">the substitute will be healthy</a>, but sometimes that’s just asking for too much. Time-wasting apps are perfect for this. Playing games, scheduling plans, texting, emailing, watching clowns on YouTube – these are all worthy smoking distractions. <ol style="list-style-type: none;"> <li><strong>3.      </strong><strong>The Money-Saving Resolution</strong></li> </ol> It’s so easy to rationalize spending money it’s not even funny. “I never do anything for myself!” Hello, spa treatment. “It’s only a $2 cup of coffee!” <em>Every day. </em>“My kids deserve it!” Do they? Okay, maybe they do, but Lincoln was right when he said you can’t please everyone all the time. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Trick</span>: Take it day by day and do your best to avoid the temptation. If your weakness is the mall, just don’t go there. If it’s the cheeseburger on your way home from work, take a different route. The same goes for that coffee on the way <em>to</em> work.
