Today (April 12, 2013) may be National Grilled Cheese Day, but it’s also Friday, which means many of us will be indulging in our favorite foods as a break from the humdrum weekday chow routine.
Some of us will dine out, some will grab takeout and a few will go all out with deluxe at-home fixin’s – especially as grilling season takes hold.
Naturally, all of this chatter about grilled cheese and other treats got us to thinking about people’s favorite Friday foods and we thought we’d compile a list of some of the most popular weekend bites. Here, we take a look at some facts and stats about America's favorite go-to good-time eats.
Was there ever any doubt? It’s hard to imagine a more popular Friday food than pizza and just to make sure we checked the stats with our friends over at Statistic Brain. Sure enough, Americans eat a lot of pizza – 252 million pounds a year, in fact. A whopping 93% of Americans eat at least one slice of pizza per month, and we’re guessing it happens on Friday for the vast majority of them.
2. Chinese Food
Is there anything quite as convenient that provides as much affordable variety as Chinese takeout? Perhaps not, and maybe that’s why there are more than 40,000 Chinese restaurants in the U.S. – more than all the Burger Kings, McDonald’s and KFCs combined, according to a 2008 TED Talk by Jennifer Lee. That’s a lot of dim sum, yo.
They’re as American as apple pie, even if no one can agree where or when it was first introduced on the continent. What we do know is that we love them. According to the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s most recent report in 2008, of all the beef purchased by restaurants 63% of it was ground beef – more than 5 billion pounds – and we’re guessing the majority of that went into burgers rather than tacos.
4. Subs, Grinders and Hoagies
Subway’s “$5 Footlong” helped push the chain well beyond McDonald’s in terms of worldwide store numbers (around 38,000 at last count), although they still lag behind the creepy clown’s sales numbers. Even so, that means they’re crankin’ out a lot of subs. Add sub makers Potbelly and Jimmy John’s to that mix and you’ve got a lot of options for a Friday sandwich fix.
