4 Reasons Why We Still Have Landline Phones

Landlines are quickly becoming a thing of the past as cell phones and smartphones replace our need for them, but about half of Americans still have a home phone. Even as the number of users decline, however, the option to keep one will likely remain – at least for a while. But, why is that? Safety / Peace of Mind You may think your smartphone is more reliable than a landline phone and in many circumstances that is 100% true, but if the power goes out your landline may end up being a lifesaver after your smartphone dies. Landlines don’t need electricity. It may seem like dark magic at work in a world where everything needs a charge to be useful, but it’s actually pretty simple – a landline draws power through the lines from emergency generators operated by the phone company when your electricity goes down. Magic, indeed! (NOTE: Magic awesomeness does not apply to cordless phones.) Nostalgia Never underestimate the power of nostalgia. No app in the world will be able to perfectly replicate a bell-driven ringer or the weird ratcheting of a rotary phone. And, it’s sad to think that, because everyone has a personal phone, the helpful (or competitive) cry of “I’ll get it!” is becoming lost to time. Privacy The NSA is totally listening to your smartphone calls and reading your texts. Or, at least they can and it appears that no one is interesting in trying to stop them. The prevailing opinion seems to be that the Fourth Amendment does not apply to your metadata, and that’s not to mention the hackers and identity thieves that are able to snatch your info right out of the air (seriously). Leave it to old-school technology to save the day. There is hardcore Supreme Court precedent that protects you against the kinds of physical phone taps required to spy on landlines and hackers are too busy trying to crack your smartphone codes to try and bother with Ma Bell. Décor For some people, having a landline phone is the same as wearing a watch in this day and age: There’s little need for it, but it looks pretty. Smartphones have made both objects nearly obsolete, yet there’s no getting around the design appeal. What’s even better is that the less you need them the more you can focus on how the look can improve your décor. Phone manufacturers know that, too, and have gone to great lengths to provide people with some very fun options. ATGStores.com is calling on you to vote on whether you think it’s worth it to still have a landline.
