4 Travel Spots (That Thaw in Summer)
Summer is just around the corner and if you’re lucky there may be a vacation in your near future. But, where will you go?
Winter travel always seems like a bit of no-brainer: go somewhere warm. It’s cold here, so let’s go to Florida, or Southern California … or some island somewhere. In summer, though, other interesting places start to thaw out and new options become available.
Here, we take a look at four spots that are way too cold to visit in winter, but get all kinds of awesome once the frost melts.
It’s true that you can still find snow in Alaska in summer, but with average temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees in the lowlands from late May through August, it’s the best time to consider a trip to The Last Frontier. Depending on which area you visit, highlights can include:

Humpback and orca whale watching (Juneau)

Northern Lights (near Fairbanks)

Bird migration (Cordova, Haines, Ketchikan)

Salmon run viewing/fishing (Chilkat River, Copper River, Yukon River)

2. Washington
Washington State’s west coast is renowned for its rain throughout most of the year, but when the skies clear from May through August there are few places more beautiful. The Olympic and Cascade Mountains are unveiled and the area’s many lakes and waterways warm to inviting temperatures. Hotspots include:

San Juan Islands

Sweden is just downright cold in winter, but the Gulf Stream can warm things up in summer, so if you’re planning a trip you should think about going from June through August. Sun will be in abundance and average temps can get pretty cozy, depending on where you are. Some beautiful spots during this time of year include:
4. St. Petersburg (Russia)
Russian winters are brutal, but summer in St. Petersburg can be a surreal experience as perpetual twilight takes over the city due to its extreme latitude. May through July are the optimum summer travel months, although the small window means you’ll likely run into many other travelers. Some can’t-miss stops in this beautiful city include:

Stars of the White Nights Festival

Catherine Park (Pushkin)

International Musical Olympus Festival
