4 Ways to Keep Winter Snow Out for the Holidays

Winter snow is a magical, beautiful backdrop to any holiday occasion, but when it turns to slush and threatens your lily-white carpets and upholstery, well ... all bets are off!

It’s always better to go out in the snow rather than bring it in, so here are four ways you can keep winter’s fluff from ruining your stuff.

Make a Mudroom

We’ve covered the basics of the DIY mudroom in previous posts (here and here), and now is the best time to take a few of those steps – before your holiday houseguests step all over your carpets with snowy shoes!

When there’s so little time for big updates, as is often the case, a bit of redesign can work wonders. Here, consider adding a place to sit and some shoe storage in your entryway that will make it easier for people to remove their frosty footwear.

Reboot Your Boot Scraper

Here’s an interesting question: Can something be so useful it transcends style? If so, your garden-variety boot scraper fits the bill.

They may not be the sexiest things in the world, but come wintertime they are heaven on earth for the folks who’d rather not have snow and slush tracked through their homes.

Invite a New Welcome Mat

Like everything else, doormats can wear down and lose their effectiveness over time. This is especially true of bristle mats; they’re better at removing snow than rubber mats, but eventually the bristles turn to nubs and they need to be replaced.

Be choosy about your welcome mat, and remember – you can have more than one and swap them out as the seasons change, or double up your defense by having both an indoor and outdoor mat.

Clear a Path

Last but not least, you can reduce the amount of snow that gets into your house by making it disappear before it even gets a chance to ride in on somebody’s shoes.

A snow blower works best, but even a shovel, a broom and a bit of salt can go a long way to keeping your walkway safe and snow-free for your holiday guests.
