5 Amazing Moms (You May Not Know)

This Sunday is Mother’s Day and if you haven’t bought a present yet, well … it’s never too late to call. And, seeing as how staying in touch with your mom is better than any gift, we thought we’d set the selling aside and give a nod to five fantastic moms who, like so many others out there, deserve a little more time in the spotlight 1. Meave Leakey (Mother to Louise Leakey) Dr. Leakey is a member of the second generation of the Leakey family dynasty of world-renowned scientists, the majority of whom focus their efforts in the field of paleontology. In 1999, Dr. Leakey shared a discovery credit with her daughter, Louise, when they unearthed a 3.5 million-year-old skull and partial jaw believed to represent a new branch of early hominids. 2. Margaret Groening (Mother to Matt Groening) Margaret Groening – who sadly left us April 22, 2013 – was the inspiration behind The Simpsons iconic character, Marge Simpson. Her son, Matt, created the record-breaking cartoon in 1987 and famously named all of the main characters after members of his family. As one commenter wrote to Matt upon her passing, “Your mom became everyone’s mom.” 3. Mary ‘Dannie’ Tillman (Mother to Pat Tillman) In April 2004, Dannie Tillman faced unthinkable news – her son, U.S. Corporal Patrick Tillman, had been killed in Afghanistan by enemy combatants. It would take years and Ms. Tillman’s dogged determination to uncover the truth surrounding her son’s death: an incident of friendly fire shrouded in a government cover-up that would rock the nation. 4. Gretchen Witt (Mother to Liam Witt) When Liam was diagnosed with cancer in 2007, Gretchen decided to hold a bake sale to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer. By 2008, she had co-founded Cookies for Kids’ Cancer with her husband, Larry, and has since raised millions of dollars for the cause. Gretchen and Larry lost Liam in January 2011, but they continue their mission, donating 100% of all sales profits to fight cancer. 5. Tawakkol Karman (Mother to Three Children) Ms. Karman is a Yemeni journalist and politician, and at age 32 she was the youngest person to ever win a Nobel Prize. She was awarded the Peace Prize in 2011 for her work as a human rights activist and protest leader in some of the most hostile environments of our time. Her children’s names remain unlisted out of respect for their safety. ATGStores.com would like to thank all of those wonderful mothers out there for everything you do, and we hope you have beautiful Mother’s Day.
