5 Fab Garden Shed Mods

How nice can a backyard shed really be? Just ask the winner of Britain’s annual Shed of the Year contest and you might get a bit of an idea.

Of course, you’ll have to ask a past winner because this year’s winner hasn’t been chosen yet, but you can get a look at a few of the best entries for 2015 and decide for yourself which one deserves the crown.

It may also give you some inspiration for what you can do with your own shed as the weather starts to warm. A few ideas these lads and lasses had:

1. Pub

A person could complain that this idea lacks imagination, and it's those types who are rarely invited into the so-called "pub shed," a design not unique to Britons. Many of these button-sized brewpubs feature running water to make a wet bar possible, but a dry bar could work just as well.

2. Soda Stand

Just add vinyl booths, checked tablecloths, some vintage tchotchkes and a splash of neon and you’ve got a perfect soda stand in need of an even more perfect soda jerk.

3. Hobbit House / Leprechaun Lair

The more creative and fantastical among us may enjoy making some supernatural embellishments to our sheds. At least one craftsman has taken this tack in 2015’s competition and it's easy to see how even just a little decoration can create a cool theme in any shed.

4. Cultural Homage

A leading contender in this year’s contest is a Japanese teahouse designed by Derek Verlander of Essex, England. Granted, a big part of the attraction is that he also designed the full-on Japanese garden in which the teahouse sits – that includes a traditional garden bridge over a koi pond – but the teahouse is also really quite nice.

5. Tiki Hut

Replicating this design could be as easy as staking some torches in front of your current garden shed. Just add a few stools and a cooler and you’re halfway to Maui.

Or, you know, you could just go the traditional route and use your shed as … a shed. Pubs and soda stands are pretty sweet, but a place to store your lawnmower can definitely come in handy from time to time.
