5 Reasons Fake Plants Rock

When did it become so bad – so offensive – to decorate with artificial plants?

Real plants are lovely, of course, and most people would probably choose the live version over the knockoff in the best of all possible worlds, but the broader reality is that there are times when faking it is better.

What’s more, there’s no shame in it. People who curl their noses up at artificial plants haven’t considered all the possibilities for how they might be used, much less those possibilities for why they can be used. Why, indeed?

1. “I’m an unwitting plant murderer.”

It may come as a surprise to the botanically gifted that some people out there can’t keep a plant alive no matter how hard they try. It’s not a matter of neglect or abuse; they just kill plants. Take heart, plant murderers! At worst, it’s involuntary plant-slaughter and it’s okay if you want to spruce things up with a little immortal faux foliage.

2. “I live in (insert location with extreme temperatures).”

Sometimes even inside temperatures won’t accommodate the kind of plant life you want to use in your décor. Some plants can survive just about anything, but people’s tastes in plants often don’t jibe with their tastes in geography. So, does that mean an Alaskan can’t have a potted palm? Um … no.

3. “I travel a lot.”

How many times can you ask your neighbor to water your plant before it basically becomes her plant that you’re just borrowing? Four times a month? Six? Sometimes life creates limits, but those limits don’t have to include an inability to decorate with plants.

4. “I just like the blooms.”

Of course you do! Flowering plants are typically more beautiful when they’re flowering, so to speak. It’s not a crime to reap the décor rewards year-round rather than waiting to enjoy those blooms when they come into season.

5. “I like to save money.”

Last but not least, artificial plants can be money savers, especially for people without green thumbs. Plants can be expensive; some more so than others. For example, it’s not a coincidence that artificial orchids are popular as an entire category; it’s because they’re often pricey and hard to keep alive.

So, the next time you think about dropping green at the greenhouse, keep in mind that there's nothing wrong with trying a more permanent option.
