5 Space-Saving Home Bar Tips

It is a pervasive myth that the home bar is a luxury only attainable by blue-blooded fat cats with acres of extra space and money to burn. No, sir. Technology, innovation and a strong desire to relax with a cocktail in the absence of terrible karaoke has made the dream of the home bar possible for millions of Americans all across this fine land. Being your own bartender no longer requires an elaborate basement remodel. In fact, it doesn't even require a basement, or anywhere near that much room to make the magic happen. 1. Bar Size The first thing you need to do is designate your preferred space and measure how much room you do have. Be sure to account for the room you’ll need for seating and space for getting behind the bar, if available. If you don’t have enough space for seating, don’t worry – there are workarounds. 2. Bar Shape Your bar’s shape can be a creative solution to limited space. There are all kinds of options here, from the traditional rectangular bar to very compact models that extend from the wall or even fold away. Mobile Bar It may be that you need to forgo the idea of dedicated bar seating and serving, and if that’s the case then you can still entertain in style with a portable bar or drink caddy, like the one to the right. There are many foldable models and caddies typically come on wheels; both options that make owning your own bar a snap. 4. Server or Sideboard These are two more classy ways to add bar storage and service areas, particularly if you’ve decided against seating. Sideboards and servers make great drink stations with enough room for bottles, glasses, mixers and more. 5. Minibar If all of these options still take up too much room, there’s always the minibar. Compact, discreet and unassuming, a good minibar can make drink service easy when guests pop in – not to mention being a great conversation piece.
