8 Best Alternative Uses for Garages (Part I)

As recently as 2013, consumer investment in garage improvement and organization was outpacing that of the homes to which they were attached, perhaps fueled in part by a recession that continues to drive people to squeeze more utility out of the space they already own.

At the time, research conducted by Whirlpool revealed that only 35 percent of U.S. two-car garages actually had enough room to house two cars, the rest being used for storage or other purposes. Storage we get, but what are those other purposes?

1. Airbnb Conversion

Airbnb, the online hub that allows homeowners to rent out extra space, has created a thriving market for people who want to make a little extra money (or a lot) by renting out an extra room.

True, many Airbnb’s are mother-in-laws or guest houses that set apart from the main house, thereby providing more privacy for guests, but with a little remodeling – and an extra wall – the same accommodation can be created in a garage.

2. She Sheds & Man Caves

Is it just a coincidence that the popularity of the “staycation” dovetailed with the growing interest in garage conversion? Maybe, but either way, everyone can agree that it’s important to be able to relax at home.

To that end, sometimes it helps to have a private oasis – an escape hatch that lets us break from the kids, the chores and the clamor of everyday life. And if that means we have to park on the street, so be it.

3. Game Rooms

Compromise is the glue that keeps many a household together, which means your beloved ping pong table may end up in the garage instead of the living room.

Fair enough. But, now that you’re committed, you may as well add billiards and a poker table to round things out.

4. Home Bars

This may be part of the game room, or it may stand alone as a saloon with a singular, spirited purpose. Or, it may be an extension of an entirely different design scheme.

The big decision here is whether you’d like to have a dry bar or a wet bar. The former is certainly easier to install, but a wet bar can really add value to the home.

Tune in tomorrow to find out the final four on our list of the most popular garage renovation projects.
