It’s been 12 years since our nation faced one of the worst tragedies in its history on September 11, 2001, and for many Americans there is still much to mourn; a personal loss, a loss of a sense of security, or perhaps even more.
There is no way to forget what happened on that day for those of us who lived and were a conscious part of our communities and our world on that late summer morning. There is sadness in that, of course, but there is also hope – a hope that we grow stronger with each passing day, even in the face of a painful past and an always uncertain future.
But, there is also magic. September 11th, while horrible, gave us a glimpse of the mettle of America. Military might is one thing, but on that day we witnessed the true power of the country – the willingness of a diverse and dynamic citizenry to come together as one. It was made all the more beautiful for its glaring contrast to the chaos that served as its backdrop.
The strength and integrity of a nation is bolstered by the memory of those who have given everything to preserve it. It’s often the case that we turn our thoughts to the soldiers, the firefighters and the emergency responders – and they do mean the world to us.
But, we would also like to take a moment to remember all of those who felt the call in their hearts without any sense of duty or vocation beyond their humanness. There were so many who put their lives on the line simply because to not do so would mean the loss of something much more profound.
The sky was so blue that day. For those who are still lost in the darkness of mourning, we hope you see blue skies again soon.
We will never forget.
