A Halloween Safety Spell

"Cauldron thick, boil and bubble; think 'safety first' and have no trouble! Gloom and doom and threatening ghouls, will be no more if you follow the rules!" (Or something like that. Some witch spilled fairy tears in the Safety Section of our spellbook.) Halloween is a fun and happy holiday filled with candy, costumes and corn mazes, but it's also a pretty crazy tradition when you think about it. Here you are, sending your kids out onto the streets at night, masked and anonymous, to knock on the doors of strangers in hopes of acquiring food items of unknown origin. Did Halloween just get a whole lot scarier, or what? Hopefully, it didn't scare you enough to cancel the whole affair, because kids love Halloween. Kids are guaranteed to love it even more, though, if they know how to play it safe. Plus, you'll be less inclined to sit staring out the front window, clutching the curtains and thinking about drooling clowns with razors for fingers hiding behind every bush in the neighborhood. Just keep these tips in mind:

Ghastly Groups: Make sure your kids trick-or-treat in groups and are accompanied by an adult. If they're old enough to venture out alone, make sure they stick together, follow a specific route and are home by a designated time. (You may want to frisk them for soap, eggs and TP as well.)

Scare-Free Sweets: Tell your kids not to eat any treats until they bring them home for inspection. Beware of homemade treats, toys with small parts, fruit and any treats that are unwrapped.

Ghostly Glow: Send a flashlight, glow stick or reflector with your kids so they can see and be seen. There are several kid-friendly flashlights available that are easy to afford and hard to break.

Haunted House: Remind kids of "stranger danger" and that entering unfamiliar homes or vehicles is a no-no.

Ghouls' Rules: Most cops won't think twice about handcuffing a kid. Make sure your tykes know the difference between a harmless (and legal!) prank and an act of vandalism.

Bespectacled Specters: If your child is wearing a mask make sure it doesn't obstruct vision or breathing.

All of us here at ATGStores.com hope that you and your family have a fun, happy and safe Halloween!
