Create Holiday Fun with Front Yard Lighting

The HOA can be a passive-aggressive bunch. For the suburban family, there’s always a lot of pressure to take the cake with a decadent yet tasteful yard makeover come holiday season.

You’ll get a lot of mileage out of your outdoor tree lighting, string lights, wrought-iron reindeer and inflatable snowmen, but don’t discount how much of a statement you can make with smartly placed outdoor lighting. The way you light your yard (beyond the billions of holiday bulbs) can really make an impact and set the mood this holiday season.

More Shadow, More Mood

If you have a holiday display or other focal point in your yard, you can use a small landscape light with a single bulb to create great shadow and depth. Position the fixture in front of the display facing your home at an angle (so you don’t have to deal with the glare) and perhaps even shield it on the curb side to create more action.

Finding the right spotlight direction and casting shadows in areas that may lack decoration is an easy way to create a layered lighting look with less.

Shadow Goes Both Ways

You can also place outdoor lighting directly behind your landscaping and décor objects to add definition and drama to your yard. The trick is to find an angle that gives you the backlit relief without blinding the viewer on the other end.

One of the best ways to do this is to backlight your home or other backdrop or use backlighting in tandem with a spotlight fixture to create balanced feature lighting that keeps shadows where they do the most good.

Step into the Spotlight

Spotlights are an easy go-to for all kinds of outdoor lighting tricks for the holidays. You can use them to create a backlight or throw your décor into relief, but you can also add colored bulbs to your current lighting to create a light show with or without the objet d’art accompaniment.

You’ve likely seen it before and it’s a classy way to go. Put a red light in a spotlight here, put a green one in the spotlight over there and train them both to illuminate the frontage of your home in holiday glory. Boom. Done and done.

But, you can also use this technique to light up archways, fencing and pathways, which can look just as good and add some creative flair to boot.
