Creative Ways to Use Your New Spare Room

You might be an Empty Nester, a parent of college-aged kids or a lucky new homeowner, and now you’re wondering what you really want to do with all the free space in that new spare room.

There’re always the usual fallbacks: crafts room, spare bedroom, junk room, etc. But, there’s a good chance you’ll be as disappointed and bored with those choices as your gut is telling you. Think: Do you even like crafts that much? Scrapbooking takes passion, and if you don’t have it now a crafts room won’t prime the pump the way you think it will.

So, what to do? What are some creative options that are more exciting, but still realistic?

Music Room

This actually used to be a thing back in the day. Moneyed bluebloods would dedicate a room to musical pursuits and fill it with instruments so people could jam, which amounted to some pretty wicked chamber music back then.

Nowadays we call it a studio and it’s still a cool idea. Computers and the Internet make it easier than ever to record beats and learn new instruments; with a little practice, anyway.

Sitting Room

Another old-timey classic, you can think of a sitting room as a meditation room that doesn’t require meditation. As long as you’re wearing house slippers and a smoking jacket you can call it whatever you want.

Dark Room

Making a dark room is probably easier than you think. The hardest part – and most essential aspect – is that you make the room absolutely dark. If you can do that, the rest is just a matter of buying the proper materials and they aren’t really all that expensive.

Of course, you do have to own a film camera, but even that is a fairly affordable toy these days. The only other thing you need is knowledge and the Internet is having a special on that right now: FREE.

These are just a few ideas, but hopefully they provide some creative inspiration that will help you make something fun of your space instead of letting it fill up with old exercise equipment and Reader’s Digests.
