Do Metal Detectors Ever Find Anything?

We’ve all seen the slightly creepy metal detector commercial (that hasn’t changed since it was made in 1972) with the guy holding up a sad-looking ring while a voiceover tells you that, “You, too, can find buried treasure!” But, is it true? Can you really find anything worth looking for, and do people really still use metal detectors? Surprisingly, the answer is a resounding double “Yes!” And, although metal detecting may not be the hobby for everyone, it’s definitely a way to pass the time that can result in a payday. In fact, in some circles these hobbyists (officially known as metal detectorists) are known to get pretty territorial – like a gambler who hovers over one particular slot machine because she’s waiting for it to “get hot.” Detectorists with this level of commitment no doubt belong to the Federation of Metal Detector and Archeological Clubs (FMDAC), which is indeed a real thing. If you don’t believe it, just take a gander at the official seal: [caption id="attachment_15126" align="alignleft" width="243"] Standard metal detector delivery method.[/caption] Anytime we see a screamin’ eagle holding a metal detector you can bet there’ll be a whole new batch of gold bricks for those detectorists to find. Joshing aside, though, there have been some tremendous finds in past years by everyday folks with basic metal detecting equipment … In 1984, the auspicious inaugural year for FMDAC, an archeology volunteer found a ring at Little Bighorn – with a finger bone still in it. More recently, 2009 saw the discovery of the “Beowulf cache” of 1,500 pieces of silver and gold Anglo-Saxon war treasure, gold and silver Iron Age neck ornaments and “The Shrewsbury Hoard” of 10,000 Roman coins dating back 1,700 years, all of which are estimated to be worth millions – millions upon millions, really. Of course, an average day of “detectoring” will likely not result in such a find, but it really is like the lottery – you can’t win if you don’t play. Now, if you do decide to get in the game, keep in mind that every strip of land you scour is owned by someone else … and normally, this would be where we advise that you always ask permission, but instead we’d rather remind you that this gives you the excuse you always needed to add “… the Plunderer” to the end of your name. ATGStores.com wishes all of you happy detectoring!
