Go Art Deco: Gotham Style Gone Glam

Art Deco, a design style that literally burst into the American consciousness with bold lines and even bolder colors in the Roaring Twenties, is finding its way back into the limelight with the rise of the “Past Modern” trend in 2016.

There are certain elements of Art Deco that lend itself to contemporary interpretation, and we’re seeing more of that as designers reach into the past to bring their modern creations to life.

Past Modern

Past Modern is a blend of old and new style, and the Art Deco designs in furniture, fixtures and art fit well into the theme. Its sharp edges and industrial feel balance well against the more organic shapes that started to gain in popularity in the 40s, when the movement began to give way to a more modern style.

This new trend softens Art Deco angles with curvilinear design in natural materials, and dials down the ornamentation for a more simplified approach to luxury.

The result is less a return to Art Nouveau than it is something altogether new – a splash of traditional class in the mix of the modern aesthetic.

New York & Hollywood

Art Deco is synonymous with the Hollywood glamour and industrial advancement of New York City in the first half of the 20th century – imagine the intersection as Batman’s Gotham or Gatsby’s West Egg and you’ve got a good idea of the style.

Past Modern brings a little light to this world, which is often imagined with masculinity and brooding darkness (in the Caped Crusader’s version, anyway). Highlights might come in the form of crystal accents in lighting, frills on textiles and balancing dark hues with white and neutral tones.

GET THE LOOK: Experiment with Art Deco in the Past Modern mode by taking what you like most from the former and blending it with your favorite modern styles to create a glamourous, ritzy feel to your space.
