Hang It All! (And Create More Kitchen Space.)

No matter how much kitchen counter space you have, it’s just never enough, yet despite this universal truth we insist on overcrowding counters instead of employing more ingenious storage methods.

Well, no more! It’s time to get that kitchen gear up and out of the workspace – but without storing it in the cabinets where it’s too far out of reach.

Here are some ideas about how to keep kitchen tools close at hand without cluttering up those counters.

Get hooked.

Hooks are a fast, easy way to create some room without reengineering the whole kitchen or investing a ton of money. A little hook here, a little hook there – little hooks everywhere!

These could be adhesive, or they could be screwed into existing shelving for a more permanent feel. And, you can also find magnetic hooks that can affix to your fridge or other metal surfaces.

Rack your pots.

The pot rack is a tried and true kitchen storage addition, but it’s not always that easy to wedge one in there without some significant retooling.

You can get them with lights, if you find you need to replace lighting to fit one in the space, but if there are no fixtures in your way they’re actually very easy to hang – especially if they're the kind you just mount on the wall.

Use your magnetic charms.

Magnetic strips for your knives used to be the cool kitchen accessory, but now you can get magnets for everything; magnetized racks, spice containers, cup holders and more.

The only question is when to stop, because too many magnets and things start to get weird.

Go island hopping.

Storing things in kitchen island and carts isn't the same as stuffing things in cabinets, because most have open storage areas that leave your kitchen utensils exposed for easy access.

This is especially helpful for those small appliances that you want to keep close at hand (waffle iron!), but don’t use every day and so have a hard time justifying dedicated counter space.

Use these tips and free up some room in the kitchen – your counter and your inner cook will be glad you did.
