In the cult crime classic The Zero Effect, starring a young Bill Pullman and an even younger Ben Stiller, a very important piece of evidence is lost – and then later found – in the cushions of a couch. This spurred an informal poll asking:
What is the most valuable thing you ever lost, and then found, in your couch cushions? Although anecdotal, the answers are nonetheless quite amusing.
Everybody saw this one coming. The couch is always the first stop on the search for loose quarters, but it’s been known to gobble up higher sums as well. Even so, it usually adds up to little more than pocket change when compared to everything else on this list.
Earrings are the most frequently reported type of jewelry lost in the Barcalounger Bermuda Triangle, but often not the most valuable. No, that honor goes to rings – and you don’t have to be Frodo Baggins to know what kind of missing ring causes the most anxiety.
3. Mobile Devices
This one would be at the top of the list if it were organized by frequency. It seems that most people have, at one time or another, seen their smartphones go missing only to have them turn up in the couch. Knowing that, it’s hard to imagine that just 20 years ago smartphones wouldn't even be on this list.
Ah, keys – so cheap to make, yet so costly to lose! Time is money and when you can’t leave for work because you can’t lock up your house or start your car ... And, that doesn’t even begin to account for the frustration you feel after you find them.
Wait, what? Yep, that’s right: There are a few people out there who have found their missing pets nestled within the couch cushions. What kind of pets, you may ask? Honestly, we don’t think you want to know (but there was at least one report of a snake). Gah.
6. Remote Control
Last but not least is the trusty remote. One may wonder how this ranks among the “most valuable” things lost in a couch, but as everyone knows, the clicker is nearly worthless – until you lose it.
