German cars. German roads. German lighting. It all has a reputation for uber-quality and reliability, and something the Germans proudly call "Handwerkstradition."
To put it lightly, German engineers are hard core when it comes to precision. The only reason they don't build everything in the world is because the one thing they don't do is rush their work. Craftspeople in Deutschland take their time fine-tuning mechanics, choosing perfect materials and bickering stoically about how to shave a millionth of a second off of various processes and response times. The result, though, is a product unrivaled in its class.
That is the story of Höltkotter lights: a company that started in 1964 that has spent every minute since then trying to perfect the art of beautiful lighting. Tom Lillie, a lighting manufacturer for Holtkötter, describes a process of reverse refinement wherein they begin with the light source, move on to the dimming element, then the finish, and finally the overall design. They call their products the ultimate lighting machines, and it's hard to argue with them.
Light for the Aging Eye
Lillie notes that Holtkötter uses halogen bulbs in many of its light designs, and it's not only because they last longer and are therefore less expensive in the long run. The deeper reasoning behind the move is driven by research that the company supports at the University of Colorado, Boulder, into improving light sources for the aging eye.
It's no secret that our eyes begin to fail as we grow older, but doctors are still learning how the process unfolds, particularly with regard to how the eye filters light. Cataracts and macular degeneration are common with age, and Holtkötter's lights - which also have revolutionary dimming technology - are designed to provide the right spectrum of light at the right level of brilliance.
The result is a beautifully designed light that works amazingly for everyone, but especially well for people with sensitive lighting needs.
“We really care,” says Lillie, referring to Holtkötter's customers. “It’s not just about turning [out] product and manufacturing volume. First and foremost we want to provide the best light for our customers.”
