House of Mirrors

Most people would probably classify a mirror as a piece of home décor, but it’s really more of a tool – a tool that has a lot of different uses, one of which happens to have a decorative element. Mirrors are nearly mythical when it comes to design status and it’s a shame that the bulk of their use is squandered in the bathroom. It’s like hanging the Mona Lisa in the basement of the Louvre. A great decorative mirror can do a lot more than just show you how whipped you look in the morning. Like what, you may ask? Well, let’s see.

1. Illusion of Space

Anyone who’s ever been to a buffet knows how this works, but instead of creating an infinite expanse of deliciousness you can creatively extend the dimensions of your home. Placement is as important as size when it comes to pulling off the illusion. The mirror needs to be large, but it also needs to reflect open space (or another mirror) rather than an opposing wall or other flat, neutral object.

2. Reflected Light

Get ready, ‘cause here comes the science: A mirror can’t double the amount of energy from a light source, but it can and will reflect it if you place it in the right spot. That means you can redistribute the light in a given room, which can make the room appear brighter. Take a look around and see where light is striking the walls from windows and skylights, and also consider areas near, but not directly in line with, light sources. These are good places to put mirrors to enhance light and brighten the room.

3. Master of Proportion

Mirrors fill walls in ways that paintings, portraiture and other types of hanging art don’t, and can create a sense of proportion with regard to the rest of the décor. This is especially true when a wall mirror or set of mirrors is selected that “fit” the room well. Big mirrors are great, but ample (if not equal) space should be left between their edges and the wall and ceiling. ATGStores.com hopes you enjoy making more light and space in your home with the magic of mirrors.
