How to Choose Craft Room Furniture

Craft rooms are gaining in popularity as empty nesters, late bloomers and homespun entrepreneurs seek their creative sides, and so craft room furniture has become a bit of a hot topic.

What’s the difference between craft room furniture and any other piece of furniture? Answering that question will lead you exactly where you want to go while outfitting your ultimate craft room. Here are four factors to consider to get you started:

1. Affordability

This is going to be the primary driver for most crafters and may lead many people to seek out second-hand furniture. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it doesn’t hurt to note that deals abound in every market for good craft room furniture. It’s not really a specialty item and no one gets bonus points for the vintage look.

While affordability may be the most important factor, it’s not the only factor …

2. Durability

Ideally, craft room furniture is tough. One might argue that it could/should also be disposable, but on balance a durable piece is going to serve you better than a disposable one, as it dovetails better with affordability.

What does durable craft room furniture look like? It’s made with solid joinery, galvanized or stainless steel parts and can take a beating without too much to show for it afterwards. In other words, being easy to clean can also add to its value.

3. Utility

Tough, cheap craft room furniture is great so long as it serves its purpose. If it doesn’t work for you then it’s not going to work. Some pitfalls and how to avoid them:

- Wobbly chairs (crooked lines and crooked spines)
- Short desks (sore shoulders)
- Bad lighting (bad everything else)
- Too little storage (disorganization, misplaced items, delayed projects, etc.)

4. Style

Style is easily the least important of the factors listed here, but the inspiration you pull from your surroundings can’t be gainsaid. If you don’t like the way your craft room furniture looks it won’t work as well for you as it should.

Keep these four factors in mind when you’re looking for your craft room furniture and they’ll help you stay on the right track as you outfit your perfect craft room.
