When hosting overnight visitors, there are few things that can make them feel as welcome as the luxury of a dedicated guest bedroom.

However, putting this space together can be a bit challenging. After all, a guest room doesn’t necessarily need all the same furniture or items your personal bedroom does; in your own space, you know exactly how you like things and what is most convenient and comfortable. But, there’s no way to know all your different guests’ preferences, and it can be fun designing a guest room that serves everyone’s needs while keeping the space elegant and inviting.

So, what do you need to create a comfortable retreat for your guests? Let’s start with the basics:

Essential Furniture

A Bed

A bed is always a good place to start when furnishing a guest bedroom! Ideally, you should have at least a full- or queen-size bed so to comfortably accommodate couples if needed. If you don’t have room for a full-size bed, consider a futon or sofa bed to save space.

Be sure to dress your guest bed in smooth, comfortable linens. And when it comes to color, you can’t go wrong with crisp, white sheets. Guests will associate white with a clean, fresh look, and it goes with any other color you might choose for decor. White linens can also be bleached if needed, so you can always make sure your guest bed is pristine!

A bed doesn’t quite look complete without a nightstand or bedside table to anchor it. This accent also provides a convenient space for your guests’ personal effects in addition to an alarm clock, lighting and other helpful decor.

Bedside Lamps

Even if the room has adequate lighting otherwise, bedside lamps allow your guests to adjust light levels in the evening and switch off lights without getting out of bed.

A table lamp is a classic approach to bedside lighting, but a wall-mounted sconce can also be a great solution. A swing-arm sconce is extra convenient for those who like direct light while reading in bed.

You want your guest room to be a welcoming and relaxing space for your guests, so providing a space to sit is a must.

This seating doesn’t need to take up a lot of room; just somewhere to enjoy a cup of coffee, put on shoes or lay out clothing would be perfect.

Clothes Storage Space

If you have room, an armoire is ideal, as these generally offer a combination of hanging, shelf, and drawer space that would meet any guest’s needs. However, extensive clothes storage isn’t a necessity in a guest room. Unless your family or friends are moving in long-term, they most likely will not require more than a drawer or two, so small chest of drawers or even a large nightstand with storage could work for your space.

The clothing storage you provide should balance the needs of your guests with the amount of space you have. Extra storage can be useful, but having a more open floor plan can make your guest room feel much larger (particularly if you’re working with a smaller room).

Helpful Amenities

Aside from the essential furniture pieces, you may want to include these additions to ensure that guests can stay comfortable and organized.

A Space to Set Luggage

Nearly any overnight guest will be bringing luggage along with them when they visit. Planning a spot for them to set it is a helpful gesture that shows the thought you put into preparing their space.

A luggage rack or end-of-bed bench is great for this purpose, but an armless accent chair or a wide stool can also do the trick.

Extra Blankets and a Fan

Temperature is a crucial factor when it comes to sleeping comfortably. But there is a big difference in what certain people consider a good sleeping temperature; Some sleep really warm, while others are forever freezing.

Providing a fan and extra blankets gives your guests the tools they need to make themselves comfortable. A fan can also offer a soothing sound for guests who might prefer to fall asleep to white noise.

Hooks and Hangers

Whether they are traveling with wrinkle-prone clothes or they just need a spot to dry a bath towel, guests will appreciate having the option to hang a few of their items.

Hooks are a simple solution that can be mounted on the wall or the back of a door. If you have an armoire or closet in the guest room, aim to keep at least half a dozen hangers in it for guests to use. If you’re opting for wall hooks only, perhaps leave a single hanger on one of the hooks.

Extra Luxuries

If you really want to pamper your guests and give them a truly luxurious stay, consider some of these additions.

Blackout Curtains

Traveling is exhausting, and depending on how far people have come from, it can leave people jetlagged and desperate for some rest. Blackout curtains help ensure that your guests can catch up on their sleep in peace, regardless of the time of day.

Spare Pillows

Many people like to use multiple pillows, or have a strong preference for firm or fluffy, so it’s thoughtful to have a couple options on hand. You definitely don’t want to overcrowd the bed, but keeping both a soft and firm pillow on each side of the bed delivers an extra bit of pampering.

Something Personal

Aside from all these other furnishings, adding a small personalized item is a sure sign of luxury – a handwritten note, a stash of your guest’s favorite snacks or even their preferred brand of toothpaste or shampoo makes for the ultimate welcome.

You know your guests best, and a small gesture that shows you care is the most hospitable way to welcome them to your home.
