How to Make a Feature Wall

Two great things about a feature wall are that a) there are no rules and b) it can showcase whatever makes you happy – it’s basically just a wall you decorate with items you coordinate around a favorite theme.</br></br>But, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s impossible to mess up. To avoid that, just follow these easy steps and you’ll never have to explain that “one weird wall” that doesn’t make sense with the rest of your décor.</br></br><strong>Tip #1: Consider Your Current Décor</strong></br></br>By definition, a feature wall stands out from the rest of your décor, but there are endless ways you can choose to play one off the other. A feature wall can complement an overall style by mirroring colors, patterns and textures, or provide contrast by going against the grain.</br></br>But, a feature wall can also serve a purpose beyond décor. It might be a source of inspiration; a place where you display your memories or hopes for the future. Think about how those ideas will contribute to the overall look and feel of the space as you begin to consider the theme.</br></br><strong>Tip #2: Pick Your Theme</strong></br></br>Approach a feature wall like you would a tattoo – think about it for a while, and make sure you really like the idea before you let loose your creativity.</br></br>It’s not that a finished feature wall is impossible to reverse; it’s that there’s often a lot that goes into it. Aside from time and materials, you may also want to introduce art, family photos, collectibles or other items of value, and that stuff costs money.</br></br>Some of it may even be irreplaceable, so it pays to plan. Speaking of …</br></br><strong>Tip #3: Plan Your Process</strong></br></br>A feature wall can grow organically over time or be installed all at once; either way, you need to have a plan.</br></br>For example, if you decide to, say, paint a Lipizzaner stallion on your wall because you want to celebrate your passion for show horses, it’s going to be hard to switch that theme later without some real effort.</br></br>Unless you really – <em>really</em> – love horses, you may want to choose something a little less permanent by way of experiment, to see how the finished look will go with your décor.</br></br><strong>Tip #4: Enjoy</strong></br></br>A feature wall is an awesome décor addition that provides you with lots of style freedom. Subtle or loud, big or small, coordinating or contrasting – it’s a great way to add personality to any room.
