How to Make a Small Window Look Bigger

Windows bring the outdoors in, adding light and a more open feeling to any room. But, if your space has small windows, they can make an otherwise comfortable room seem a little crowded or dark.

Naturally, a space with small windows would benefit from the addition of new, larger ones; however, renovations can be expensive, messy and time-consuming, so replacements or expansions aren’t always a viable option. Even so, there are still a number of ways to make your windows appear a bit bigger without undertaking a large project.

Changing the appearance of a window is all in the way you frame it. Try one of these simple methods to better frame your windows and make them look bigger:

Add Wide Moulding Around the Window Frame

This approach fully frames the window in the most literal sense.

By adding an extra-wide border, you can visually extend the edges of the installation, and trick your brain into thinking the window itself is more substantial.

When installed properly, thick moulding can bring a finished, classy touch to almost any room.

Mount a Tall Valance or Shade

A traditional valance mounts on the wall above a window to help decorate the upper edge of it. But, because it conceals the top, a valance can be mounted a bit higher than usual to create the illusion of additional height.

Hang Curtains High and To the Sides

Where you hang your curtains in relation to the window frame defines its overall shape in your space. By hanging the curtains higher than the top of the window and off to each side you can make the installation look bigger and give it greater visual impact.

Another great tactic along these lines is to use a center curtain panel between adjacent windows to create the illusion they’re actually connected.

Any of these methods can be a great way to add a more open feel to your space and make the most of your windows!
