How to Use Mirrors for an Old-World Feel

Mirrors make for excellent décor in part because they are also functional, but what kind of look could we create if we had to be more creative about where we put them?

Back in the old days, when the only people who could afford mirrors lived in castles and other high-end stone dwellings, it was often easier to lean a heavy mirror against the wall – or have your valet hold it – than fasten it to solid rock.

Now, imagine a mirror that isn’t mounted at eye level and how that can change the décor landscape.

The Leaning Mirror

A large floor mirror that casually leans against the wall conveys a sense of style that is both luxuriant and relaxed. It also provides a unique perspective – and a more dynamic reflection – that can’t be reproduced by a wall-mounted mirror.

Hang a medieval dress off the corner of it and you’ll think you just stumbled into a Shakespeare reenactment.

The Cheval Glass

A cheval glass, or cheval mirror, is a mirror that’s mounted in a pivoting frame. Again, these were common because it was often more convenient than hanging heavy mirrors without a drill and a masonry bit for help.

The cheval style is great because it provides the best of both worlds; a functional mirror that also looks like something out of Grimm’s fairytales.

The Tilted Mirror

Then as now, heavy mirrors are hard to hang. And, when you finally do get them mounted, you may end up with a mirror that tilts out and away from the wall because of the weight.

The trick to utilizing this is to mount it higher so that you can get a bit of a bird’s-eye view of yourself. Or, you can try mounting smaller mirrors in this way over windowsills and other places that could use a lofty accent.

Try these mirror tips or consult a local interior designer via Porch.com to give your home a little Old-World flair and let us know what you think!
