Is ‘Cheap’ Home Décor a Bad Thing?

It takes a lot of sand (as they used to say) to even suggest cheap home décor can be a good thing, but the truth of the matter is that we’re all looking for a deal and there’s a pretty wide gap between what's “cheap” and what's inexpensive.

Cheap vs. Inexpensive

Really, it’s a matter of semantics and inflection. When we say something is cheap, we often mean to convey an opinion that the thing is poorly made and not worth the cost no matter what the price.

On the other hand, though, a “good bargain” is inherently cheap because it costs less than something of comparable quality that’s more expensive.

So, what’s the point? The point is the ability to distinguish between truly cheap home décor and home décor that just happens to be affordable.

Cheap vs. Cheaply Made

How do we know cheap home décor when we see it, particularly when we’re shopping online? That’s a great question, and one that’s not always answered by price:

Brand Reputation: Does the manufacturer have a reputation for quality? If so, you can expect that brand’s products to perform regardless of price. If the price is right, but you don’t know the brand, take a second to Google it.

Materials: Do the product materials meet your standards? There’s nothing wrong with plastic home décor so long as it’s what you want. This is more about managing expectations than anything else. If you’re searching for a vase made of a specific material, be sure to check the materials list to see if it meets your criteria.

Sale Percentages: How big is the discount, really? Truth-in-advertising laws (and common decency) prevent retailers from proclaiming massive discounts if those numbers don’t square with retailer costs. Yes, there is a suggested retail price that manufacturers can set so that it may then be discounted by retailers, but those numbers must be based in reality.

Cheap vs. Cheap-Looking

Whoa! That’s just rude.

But seriously, this is what we’re all trying to avoid. Think: What good is something of quality – regardless of what it costs – if it looks cheap?

This is where customer reviews come in very handy, but here’s something else you need to keep in mind when shopping for so-called cheap home décor: Well-reviewed items usually translate into hot sellers that are discounted less frequently, so sometimes finding that great deal may require a little trailblazing effort on your part.

Good luck, and happy hunting for great cheap home décor!
