Remembering Reading Lamps

Do people even use reading lamps anymore, or have they become purely decorative items like telephones, clocks and mailboxes? Smartphones, tablets and e-readers make it a snap to read in the dark without a lamp thanks to their mind-controlling glow, while simultaneously delivering a death blow to those old-fashioned paper foldy things that don’t light up. So ... yeah. Maybe there really isn’t any need for a … WAIT! Of course there’s still a need for reading lamps. As a society, we’re getting pretty quick at throwing things away because our robot overlords have figured out how to keep us tethered to our mobile devices, but maybe there are a few things a reading lamp can do that the droids haven’t figured out yet. Eye Rest Perhaps the most important thing a reading lamp can do is allow you to peruse increasingly rare printed materials without frying your eyeballs. Eye fatigue is becoming an epidemic and if you think it doesn’t have anything to do with your mobile device then the robots may have already won. Optional Light/Nightlight There’s definitely an app for that, but it likely amounts to an obnoxious power drain when compared to the average reading lamp on a dimmer switch. Besides, most people would just as soon like to have their devices free to use for other things other than as a light source. Dedicated Functionality A reading lamp is a one-trick pony, more or less. If it’s ringing, vibrating or inviting you to be friends with someone then rest assured that you have arrived at the threshold of the apocalypse. That it only does one thing is not a limitation; it’s an invitation to relax and disconnect. Ambience/Décor Your tablet may be two steps away from being able to butter your bread, but it’s hard to imagine it’ll ever be pretty enough to qualify as décor. The right reading lamp can enhance the look of a room even when it’s off, which amounts to black magic when compared to mobile devices. ATGStores.com is a proud advocate for the use and enjoyment of reading lamps – and books, too, since we’re on the subject.
