Repeating Shapes in Your Style

When we think of coordinating interior design, we often focus on things like color, period style (classic, modern, etc.) or a tangible concept (ponies!), but have you ever thought about using shape as your unifying theme?

It may seem difficult at first, but simple and complex shapes repeat often in both style and design. Let’s look at some examples.

Circles & Spheres

Spherical shapes are very common in style and design. For example, you might have a piece of wall art or an area rug that emphasizes circles, and you can repeat that shape in a wall clock, your dining table, bean bags, poufs, decorative statuary and all kinds of lighting.

You’ll be surprised how quickly the theme comes together, and it’s important to avoid overpowering the space with too much of the same shape.

Ladders & Lines

This is a bit more sophisticated than spheres – because spheres are everywhere, anyway – though the ladder pattern is also prominent.

Ladder-back chairs, shiplap paneling, wood flooring, shelving and even the balusters that support your staircase handrail all include repeating parallel lines that become very noticeable as a theme without too much emphasis.

You can add to the theme with art that includes parallels, or with mod furniture that makes a statement with strong lines.

Hub-and-Spokes & Stars

The hub-and-spoke design may seem the hardest to come by of these three, but they might pop up more than you think. Consider ceiling fans, floor fans, chairs on castors and more than a few clock designs – many include a hub and spoke.

Add maritime elements like sea urchin and starfish décor, a “Sputnik” chandelier, a wagon wheel coffee table or some Moravian lights (though probably not all in the same space) and now you’re living in a world of stars.

Sounds kind of nice, doesn’t it?
