Stand aside Punxsutawney Phil: the vernal equinox is here and it doesn’t give a beaver’s dam what you think about the weather.
This is a fine example of the difference between myth and science. Pennsylvania’s porcine prognosticator of precipitation is all pomp, whereas the position of the earth in relation to the sun is the kind of science that literally brings the heat.
In other words, today – March 20th, 2013 – marks the first day of spring. Jackpot!
Okay, so maybe things won’t really start warming up for you until later in the season (sorry, North Dakota), but that shouldn’t stop you from gearing up for all the things that make spring an awesome time of year. Like what, you may ask?
Depending on your location and what you’re planting, now may be the time to get those seeds in the ground. Mid-March is usually a good time for peas, carrots, beets and broccoli, unless you’re located fairly high in the northern latitudes.
And, if you do reside in the frosty North, you may want to start those seeds indoors and then move them outside once the tundra melts.
What, you don’t like Major League Soccer? Fair enough. What about Formula One or Grand Prix motorcycle racing? These all get their start in March, along with several other options at the international level including the National Rugby League (Australia) and Nippon Professional Baseball (Japan).
Is it spring over there? Well, it’s spring in Japan, but not in Australia … but who cares? If you’re watching those events from the good ole’ U.S. of A, then you’re enjoying them in the springtime.
Last on this list, but certainly not least – we start getting more sun! And, even more awesome is that the weather just keeps getting better and better every day … until summer arrives and the heat starts melting your face off.
But, we’re talking about spring here. Spring is a season of crisp, bright sunlight and the kind of friendly temps that are perfect for getting out and enjoying some exercise, tackling that spring cleaning and just generally enjoying the vibe of new life.
