First things first: St. Paddy’s Day decorations are a fun way to celebrate even if you’re not throwing a party, so pay no mind to the typical tipplers’ traditions.
A Little History
St. Patrick is a patron saint of Ireland, but he wasn’t Irish. He was of Roman descent, and was kidnapped by Irish pirates who raided his family’s British estate back in the 4th century.
It was only after he escaped that he pursued a life of piety, and then he returned to Ireland to introduce his newfound religion to the hooligans who snatched him from his homeland as a wee lad.
Aye, but what does any of this have to do with décor? Well! The Irish are steeped in myths and legends that make up a rich oral history, and St. Patrick’s true beginnings provide the seeds for much of the symbolism celebrated to this day.
St. Paddy’s Day Trivia & Symbolism
Anything Green: Green is the “official” St. Paddy’s Day color, because all patron saints have particular colors ascribed to them and green is St. Patrick’s color. True or False? False! St. Patrick’s color is blue, and green became associated with the holiday much later as symbolic of the Emerald Isle rather than of the saint.
Shamrocks/Clovers: St. Patrick used the three-leaf clover to explain the Holy Trinity to his students. True or False? True! Historians have reason to believe St. Patrick did use the shamrock in this way, which makes it a very authentic décor item, indeed.
Leprechauns: These little green-clad men were said to have assisted St. Patrick as he chased the snakes out of Ireland. True or False? False! Leprechauns have no direct relationship with the stories of St. Patrick, and first mention of the miniature mythical men precede St. Patrick’s time in history.
St. Paddy’s Day Décor
So, how do you incorporate these ideas into your décor? There are lots of ways!
Shamrock Style: Add real clover to floral arrangements or have fun with shamrocks in upholstery and seasonal linens.
Lucky Leprechauns: Decorate with leprechaun statuary to give your home a fun St. Paddy’s feel, and maybe add a little luck along the way.
Happy St. Paddy’s Day!
