‘Tacky’ Tropical Style Done Right

There are some folks who think Hawaiian shirts are a tacky choice unless you’re actually in Hawaii (and even there it may be hard to pull off), but a jolt of tropical décor in the home is a great way to add some island spice to your design scheme.

Frilly floral embellishments and botanical themes are trending up in 2016, and a fondness for fronds in décor is proof in the banana pudding. We’re seeing it more and more on social media and in style mags, which means it could be time to go all Jungle Book on your living room.

Though, a subtler approach may also work, too …

Jungle-Themed Feature/Gallery Wall

A feature or gallery wall is a popular (and easy) way to introduce a bit of zest in an otherwise vanilla room design. It adds a splash of something wild without taking away from the overall practicality of the space.

Consider tropical-themed art prints or vacation photography to create a gallery wall, or a swatch of tropical wallpaper for a feature wall.

Tropical Plants

Tropical plants are more resilient than you might imagine, especially if you’re keeping them indoors. But, if you’re place is short on light you can always go the faux route – imitation palms look great, last forever and bring a lot of island flair into the mix.

Golden Pineapples

The golden pineapple trend is real, though one would be hard-pressed to explain how or why it came to be. Pineapples have long been a fixture in flashy décor, whether as part of today’s Vegas-style glam or the burnished Art Deco beauty of yesteryear, so it’s not exactly fair to call it a comeback.

Try riding the style wave with something understated like a lamp, or go all out with pineapple print for an unmistakably tropical twist.

It grows like a weed and is nearly indestructible, so going with the real deal is totally an option. But, if that’s not your thing you can find bamboo and bamboo patterns in almost any kind of décor.

Of course, these are just a few fun ideas for topical tropical décor – chat with an interior design pro at Decorist or Porch for even more
