Texture Focus in Décor

When it comes to style, it’s fair to say that most of us focus on things like color, size and even brand when we choose how to decorate a room – but is texture any less important?

We definitely care. The age-old question of leather vs. upholstery proves that point. But, what if we designed an entire room – an entire living space – by the feel and texture of the things inside it? How could we go about doing that? Here are some ideas:

Focus on a specific material.

Let’s go back to leather for a moment. If we look at it more broadly, we can put leather in a larger category that also includes other hides and furs. Now all of a sudden you’ve got a theme.

The cool thing about this example is that you can get a range of different textures out of it. And, of course, it goes without saying that these materials don’t have to be real. Faux furs, leathers and even crocodile or snakeskin are available for those want to go that route.

Focus on a specific texture.

Some people really love the feel of a shag carpet between their toes. It can’t be explained; only accepted. But, it’s a good example of focusing on a specific texture and putting it pretty much everywhere.

You can use texture as a theme on a lesser scale by coordinating textiles on furniture, smaller rugs and even accent pieces like pillows and ottomans.

Focus on texture balance.

Can’t decide between super fluffy and crazy shaggy? Have fun with texture by mixing bold fabrics and textiles together for a sophisticated blend that feels as cool as it looks.

A soft leather couch with an even softer sheepskin throw might make a beautiful texture combo; or, perhaps a Moroccan sanctuary of upholstered silk and satin pillows. Experiment with different textures to find the perfect feel for you.
