Thanksgiving Décor: Turkey or No Turkey?

Thanksgiving, quite possibly the best holiday ever conceived, is right around the corner and that means it’s time to start getting in the spirit of things by taking down the ghosts and cobwebs and replacing them with … what? It’s not surprising that design trends vary by region across the U.S., from the dusky blues and washed-out whites of New England’s seaside palette to the burnt sienna of the Southwest’s desert backdrop, but it’s during the holidays when commonalities in décor start to emerge – to a degree. Here, we take a look at traditional Thanksgiving décor ideas from least controversial to most embattled. Thanksgiving-Scented Candles: Candles that smell like pumpkin pie always win. Even people who hate Thanksgiving love these. Produce: This is a go-to choice in most homes. It’s inexpensive, colorful and festive, and if a few extra unannounced guests turn out for the big dinner you can eat it. Pumpkins, maize, squash, apples and root vegetables like potatoes, onions and carrots are all fair game for stuffing into your cornucopia. Foliage: Leaves and wreaths woven of branches blown bare by the winds of fall make for lovely natural décor and is also welcome in most homes. Dried plants and potpourri bundles can be used to spruce up mantelpieces, while larger floral arrangements are perfect for centerpieces. Fall-Colored Textiles: From tablecloths and runners to curtains and linens, some people take Thanksgiving décor to Level 2 with more elaborate interior design accents that complement the holiday. Level 3 is right around the corner with rugs, throws, accent pillows and other additions, although it’s important to not let the theme get away from you. If you do, you’re just one step closer to … The Gobbler: This is the proverbial line in the Thanksgiving-décor sand, crossed happily in households with kids and only with careful thought in the rest. You can argue that there’s a mature way to display a decorative turkey, but at the end of the day it’s still a hilarious-looking bird – all up in your house. And, maybe there’s more than one. It’s cool. No judgment.
