The 7 Rules of Gift Wrapping

There are dozens of gift-wrapping guides out there – including our own, which you can check out here – but there are far fewer gift-wrapping etiquette guides, and we aim to remedy that.

So, what’s gift-wrapping etiquette? Well, it’s everything you need to know once you’ve learned the gift-wrapping basics. Let’s get started.

Rule #1. Use regular office (aka “Scotch”) tape.

Long story short, there are many different kinds of tape out there in the world, and you want the kind that doesn’t require a hacksaw to remove. Nothing sucks the thrill out of gift-opening like having to fetch a butcher knife from the kitchen.

Rule #2. Don’t tape the box closed unless necessary.

The gift is already secured by your exceptional wrapping skills. Why make it any harder to get at the goodies by taping the box closed? Also, see Rule #1.

Rule #3: Remove the price tags.

It's easy to assume everyone remembers to do this, even though we all know that isn't true. So, this is your friendly reminder.

Rule #4: Don’t “overwrap” the gift.

Some people are so good at wrapping gifts they make the person opening them feel guilty, like they’re destroying works of art. This is uncomfortable territory that can easily be avoided by tempering the need to be really, really impressive.

Rule #5: Don’t “underwrap” a gift, either.

If times are tight and newspaper gift wrap is the order of the day, so be it. That’s a great workaround and a smart money-saver. But, even the classifieds can shine a little brighter if you add a few stars or other designs with a marker.

Rule #6: Avoid the gift-wrap nametag routine.

The only thing sillier than buying nametags is cutting them out of the same paper you used to wrap the gift. The one exception: If you’re wrapping and giving so many gifts you really can’t remember who gets what. In that case, you must be Santa, and Santa doesn’t play by the rules.

Rule #7: Beware the gift bag.

Gifts bags are a blessing and a curse. They’re great for people who truly can’t wrap gifts, especially when they’re oddly shaped, but the unfortunate fact is that gift bags come with an unspoken message: “This gift is an afterthought, and may even be a white elephant, re-gifted from the office Christmas party.” Ouch.

Follow these seven simple rules and you’ll be a gift-wrap master in no time.
