The Way and ‘Why’ of Urban Gardening

We talk a lot about the type of gardening people can do when they have plenty of space, but we realize that even when that space isn’t available it doesn’t change people’s desire to grow tasty food.

Everyone should be able to have a garden and thanks to the ever-adapting nature of city dwellers we have lots of great ideas for growing food in the concrete jungle. And, it’s not just for the food. There are several reasons why showing your green thumb off about town is a good idea:

1. Urban gardens are great for the environment.

Every fruit and veggie you grow is a fruit or veggie that doesn’t have to be trucked into the city from who knows where. That’s a massive savings in fuel, material resources, greenhouse gases and work hours better spent somewhere else.

2. It inspires organic/local food production.

You don’t know it yet, but your garden will be a sensation – especially after people taste your tomatoes. It’s hard to explain how much better homegrown food tastes and once you show your neighbors how easy it is to grow food that costs less and tastes better than store produce you’ll be encouraging a very healthy hobby.

3. Speaking of cheaper produce …

Even when you factor in the minimal costs of soil, containers (if needed) and seeds you’ll still come out way ahead. And, if you think you don’t have the room to grow enough produce to make the effort worth your while, you’re in for a surprise. Just a few plant stats (per plant, per season):

- Tomatoes: up to 9 pounds of fruit.
- Cucumbers: 10-15 cucumbers.
- Bell Peppers: up to 8 peppers.
- Yellow Squash: up to 25 pounds of squash.

Where You Can Start

Now that you know the power of “the grow” you’re probably wondering where you can start. And, the answer is: wherever you can find ample sunlight for the plants you want to grow. A few ideas:

- Building Rooftop
- Balcony
- Window Box
- Street-Level Community Garden
- Indoor Container Garden

Now that you have a way, a “why” and a where – as in anywhere that works! – you can start growing your garden no matter the metro.
