Valentine's Day: Guys vs. Girls

Valentine’s Day has finally arrived, making some of us swoon and others sneer at what is quite possibly the most contentious “holiday” on the books. It’s easy to see how cupid can make some hearts sore while others soar, but can there ever be common ground between the lovers and the haters? We – your ATGStores.com bloggers James Madeiros and Marlow Mercer – sat down for a candid discussion to see if we could uncover some cold, hard truths about this heartwarming holiday. James: Let’s get right to it. Do you hate Valentine’s Day? Or, have you ever hated it? Marlow: I’ve always loved Valentine’s Day! Pink hearts and bows and all that girly stuff brings out my extra feminine side to an extent that I can’t even try to deny. I also really like the crafty side of V-Day; everything on Pinterest right now is bound to make me smile. I’m actually a very affectionate person, so I love an opportunity to put it on display. What about you and the rest of guys? I’ve always been under the impression that men strongly despise Valentine’s Day. James: Ha! I don’t know that too many men actually despise it, but I’m sure some do. I think it’s more often situational and that the guys who really hate it have a reason. I mean, you have to have a reason to hate something, right? I can remember a few Februarys when it felt like cupid was more of an assassin than a well-meaning cherub. What about you – any great memories? Marlow: The best Valentine’s Day gift I ever received was an unexpected card that was sent to me when I was living abroad. It was a handmade sketched map of the world with a turn wheel at the top. When I moved the wheel, a heart traveled from my hometown to Taiwan (where I was living) and it read, “Will you be my radioactive Valentine?” I’m a complete sucker for creativity and homemade stuff. On the other hand, I’m always dumbfounded about what to get a guy! What is the male equivalent of flowers, chocolates, jewelry and perfume? James: That’s a good question. I want to say power tools and golf clubs, but I would hate those gifts. At the end of the day, I guess you can never go wrong with food and booze. That whole thing about guys being mesmerized by bacon? That’s real. If you’re hard up for an idea and short on cash – bacon. Always and forever bacon. What about for the girls? Do you think roses and candy are old and busted gift traditions? Marlow: 100% absolutely, yes. Thoughtfulness doesn’t come by way of a cliché, even as a gift. You know your partner, so you should be able to think of something they like. Flowers and candy can still be a thoughtful gift when you consider what your partner likes and incorporate that into your present. Did your most memorable Valentine’s involve candy and flowers? James: Point taken. No, it did not. I can’t really talk about it, except to say that it involved a police siren and strobe lights. Of course, the point is that I agree with you: Memorable moments are forged by the unexpected. But, what about those single folks out there? How can they make it memorable? Marlow: I would suggest making plans with a single friend. Offer to make them dinner, or go out to a bar and meet other singles! Just don’t let the day become a bigger deal than it is by letting it bum you out. Do something positive like reaching out to a friend or a relative you haven’t spoken with in a while. To the singles, the spouses and everyone in between, ATGStores.com hopes your Valentine’s Day is a warm and memorable one.
