What’s a Galley Kitchen?

It’s hard (for some us) to hear the phrase “galley kitchen” and not think of plundering, swashbuckling and skullduggery … or at least the meal that takes place before such activities begin. Unfortunately, the landlubber’s galley kitchen is only loosely associated with the excitement of the high seas. It’s named for its shape, which is usually long and narrow with restricted space for anything but kitchen work. In contrast, an open kitchen design often includes a table and enough space to entertain and move about. Getting the most out of a galley kitchen can sometimes be a tricky proposition, but keeping its utilitarian purpose in mind can help you optimize the space.

1. Steps and Stations

Real galleys (and most restaurants) use the narrow design to create an ordered flow of activity that is focused into steps and/or stations. Much will depend on where your major appliances and fixtures are located in your galley, but generally speaking you can organize things around food prep, cooking, plating the food and, finally, cleaning up.

2. Smarter Storage

Once the order of operation is established you can then arrange kitchen items to be within easy reach for the necessary activity. Place kitchen utensils in drawers in the prep area, dishware in the plating area, pots and pans in the cooking area, and so forth. You’ll do less hunting and get work done faster when everything is sensibly stored.

3. Shipshape and Shiny

Like in a small apartment, a little disorder can spiral out of control and into a big mess in a galley. There’s just less room for chaos in a small space. There’s no trick to keeping a kitchen clean, unless you count the magical powers of elbow grease and soap. The best tip is to never let a mess sit – they tend to multiply when you leave them alone. ATGStores.com hopes everyone has a great weekend and welcomes comments about galley kitchen tips and tricks.
