What’s Rustic Furniture?

The word rustic is a lot like the word vintage in that what it means now is a lot broader than what it used to mean before marketers got hold of phrases like “rustic furniture” and started applying them willy-nilly to anything made of knotty pine.

So, let’s set the record straight on rustic furniture. That way, when you decide you want some you'll know how to find it.

Defining Rustic Furniture

It’s almost easier to define rustic furniture by what it isn’t. Contrary to what the name might suggest, it’s not necessarily old, or even old-looking. There is no such thing as authentic rustic furniture, because being antique is not a prerequisite. Rustic furniture is rough, natural and possessed of a pastoral quality, and is best imagined in a context where it will look most fitting: in a log cabin or country rambler, preferably with a horse on the front lawn.

Simplicity is also synonymous with rustic design. Precision joinery is not out of the question, but there’s a limit to how machined it’s going to look. Rustic furniture doesn’t have to be handmade, but it does have a handmade feel to it. Natural edges and a rough-hewn quality are usually part of the package.

Rustic Furniture Materials

Wood, wood and more wood – and maybe a little cast iron. By its nature, rustic furniture isn’t crafted in artificial materials. Copper, glass and other Old-World materials may come into the mix, but most furniture with a rustic look is made of wood.

Further, the wood used is often unfinished or meant to look that way. Or, it may be something that’s repurposed for furniture use. Think wagon wheels turned into coffee tables and chandeliers, or barn doors turned into dining room tables.

Rustic Furniture Use & Style

You don’t have to live out in the sticks to pull off rustic style. Like anything else, rustic furniture exists on a spectrum and you can go full Grizzly Adams or subtly hint at your hickory roots with a little splash of unfinished wood in an eclectic décor mix.

Either way, rustic furniture can be a great addition to any look that could use a little splash of something natural, rugged and real.
