Who Is the Easter Bunny?

Easter weekend has arrived and the luckiest among us will receive a basket full of goodies, and the luckiest among those will get chocolate eggs, as opposed to fruit and other healthy nonsense. As legend has it, those baskets are delivered by perhaps the most enigmatic of holiday characters – the Easter Bunny. Unlike Santa Claus (jolly), turkeys (clueless), cupid (nosy) and Uncle Sam (America!), the Easter Bunny has no known personality. It’s often depicted as both a real rabbit and a caricature of a rabbit, but gender and behavior are anybody’s guess. One might think that it has to be female because of the whole egg thing, but … Even in myth, the Easter Bunny never laid any eggs, chocolate or otherwise. It just brings the eggs, which it probably stole from a chicken. How’s that for a personality trait? So, where does all this egg and bunny business come from, then? As it happens, these are both ancient symbols of fertility, which is what springtime is all about. Spring marks the beginning of new life, when the cold fades away and things start to grow again. And, nothing else grows quite like bunnies and eggs. The legend of the Easter Bunny, specifically, is thought to have started around the 17th century, although back then it was a hare that brought eggs in a more reverential and simpler tradition. Nowadays, the Easter Bunny is … still a big question mark. Santa may come in several different varieties, but he’s always immediately recognizable. The Easter Bunny, on the other hand, could easily be confused with the Trix Bunny, Bugs Bunny or any ole regular, nose-twitching bunny (a la the Cadbury Bunny). And, perhaps that’s for the best. After all, Easter weekend isn’t about rabbits. At its heart it’s about family and community, and ATGStores.com hopes you enjoy plenty of both on this most auspicious of holidays.
