Your Sanctuary of Sanity
We all deserve a quiet place where we can retreat to be alone with our thoughts, and those four minutes in the bathroom before the kids wake up do not count.
For a lot of people the Sanctuary of Sanity (we would call it the Fortress of Solitude, but some alien in a cape already took that name) is a manufactured moment in between places – like the car ride on the way to work – but it can make a world of difference when that place is always there; always waiting.
So, how to make it work? Sometimes it’s a matter of space, but furniture and décor can also help set the mood if space is at a premium – which is often the case.
Guest Room Takeover
Guest rooms sometimes exist at the expense of reality – people think they need them, but in fact only use them once a year when relatives pop in for the holidays and refuse to bunk at the Econo Lodge. Repurpose this room as your Sanctuary of Sanity and listen to how many people never complain, ever.
An Outside Chance
If there’s simply no more room at the inn, however, maybe your new sanctuary is located outdoors. A little DIY work can transform a backyard shed or space in the garage into a place where you can decompress without drawing the attention of nap haters.

Just Add Books
Installing a private library is probably a little too much to ask for most of us, but creating your own reading corner can be as easy as filling a little free space with some shelving and books. Real books may be falling out of fashion, but they can still send a message that Quiet Time is routinely enforced.
Proper Sanctuary Seating
Maximum relaxation usually requires some kind of furniture, unless you prefer a mat and meditation. If so, that’s great, but otherwise you’ll want something that really melts your butter – a little slice of heaven that fits you perfectly and helps drown out the drama.
